Comedy-drama The Big Short is growing in popularity as people try to figure out what’s going on with American society GameStop.

The video game retailer’s stock skyrocketed by more than 700% last week after Reddit users bought stocks and traded tips online.

This led many Wall Street investors, who had bet the company’s stock price would continue to fall, to lose large sums of money.

Is the Big Short a true story?

The film is based on a nonfiction book by Michael LewisThe Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, which reflected the financial crash of 2007-08.

The story has been adapted for the big screen and details how a hedge fund manager, Michael Burydecided to exploit a weakness in the US housing market in the early 2000s.

He adopted unconventional and often humorous techniques to explain complex financial terms and situations to the audience.

A data journalist, David McCandless, found the film‘s script to be over 90% accurate to the actual events.

Who stars in The Big Short?

A starry cast gathered for the making of this film produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and distributed by Paramount.

It stars Christian Bale (Burry), Steve Carell (Mark Baum), Ryan Gosling (Jared Vennett), Pitt (Ben Rickert) as well as John Magaro, Finn Wittrock, Hamish Linklater, Rafe Spall, Jeremy Strong and Marisa Tomei.

The film also features Anthony Bourdain, Richard Thaler, Selena Gomez and Margot Robbie in cameo roles as themselves, addressing the audience to explain some of the financial jargon used in the plot.

Robbie’s explanation of “subprime mortgages” while drinking champagne in a bubble bath caught the attention of many Twitter users looking for similar help in furthering their understanding of the GameStop saga.

Is The Big Short on Netflix in the UK?

The Big Short is not currently part of any streaming service available in the UK, including netflix and Amazon Prime.

However, it is available for purchase or rental on most on-demand movie platforms, as well as DVDs.

How Did GameStop’s Stock Price Skyrocket?

Speculation surrounding the value of GameStop is believed to be increasing on sub-reddits like WallStreetBets drives up the stock price.

This led to amateur investors buying shares and trading tips on social media sites, including Reddit, which saw the share price rise further.

GameStop had previously lost money, leading Wall Street investors to bet its shares would continue to fall in value.

The surge in value of GameStock saw professional traders lose large sums of money and made shareholders millionaires overnight.

Stock market activity is known as the short squeeze.
