French director Michel Hazanavicius has decided to return to the genre that won him an Oscar for The Artist for the new comedy Will.
Hazanavicius told The Hollywood Reporter that the new project will be an English-language film based on a script written ten years ago but never made.
“I liked the script,” he said. “There is neither cynicism nor irony, it is a very positive comedy. There is nothing bad about it. It’s a completely American comedy. It can be very good and very funny.
Since the success of his black-and-white silent comedy The Artist (which grossed more than $ 130 million worldwide and won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture), Hazanavicius has been offered a number of projects. He continued: “I have been sent many scripts which I had to refuse as I was already determined to make my next film, but I liked this project and I was impressed when I told them that ‘they would have to wait two years if they wanted me to do it. do it and they agreed.
Hazanavicius has made a film since The Artist titled The Search, a drama starring Bérénice Bejo and Annette Bening, which received a mixed reception at the Cannes film festival last year. It is still awaiting release in the UK and US.
It’s possible that Bejo, who landed an Oscar nomination for The Artist and is Hazanavicius’ wife, could star in his new film as well. “It’s easy to work with Bérénice and a very talented actress,” he said.
He explained that the funding is about to close soon and that he hopes to shoot the film this year with a release date of 2016.
