Sumit Naganath Joins Soho Theater as First Mumbai-Based Comedy Producer

Sumit Naganath joins Soho Theater as the first Mumbai-based comedy producer, as part of our continued work to bring the best Indian comedy to the UK and the best British comedy to India, in partnership with Mumbai arts organization G5A Foundation for Contemporary Culture.

At the forefront of India’s burgeoning comedy scene, Sumit launched the first comedy nights in his hometown of Belgaum in the southwest of the country. He went on to produce shows involving comedians Biswa Kalyan Rath, Kanan Gill, Abhishek Upmanyu and more. A comedian himself and expert in event marketing, Sumit is uniquely placed to help Soho Theater’s work with Indian comedy.

Based at G5A, Sumit is currently part of the Soho Theater team at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, working on 11 shows across 7 venues from artists Vir Das, Jinkx Monsoon & Major Scales, Patti Harrison, Thanyia Moore, Frankie Thompson, Kai Samra , Sami Abu Wardeh, Dr. Brown, Sarah Sherman, ALOK and Haley McGee.

The Soho Theater was in Mumbai recently, establishing partnerships and presenting Nina Conti in partnership with G5A Warehouse – two sold out shows, bringing Nina to a whole new audience. Sumit’s role as a comedy producer – Mumbai will see him supporting Soho Theater by bringing more comedians from the UK to India, following previous performances by Shappi Khorsandi, Ahir Shah, Lauren Pattinson and the theater show Half Breed. The role also involves Soho Theater’s ongoing and growing work in bringing Indian comedians to London and UK audiences in Dean Street, on tour, online and by 2023 at Soho Theater Walthamstow. Azeem Banatwalla is currently performing, following recent runs by Sapan Verma and Daniel Fernandes, with Sumukhi Suresh arriving in October. The Soho Theater presents Vir Das on tour across the country after its sold-out Edinburgh run.

About joining Soho Theatre, Sumit said: “I am delighted to work with the Soho Theater in London. This is an amazing opportunity for me, and I look forward to contributing to the work of Soho Theater in bringing Indian comedians to the UK and international comedies to Mumbai.
