The new comedy “Maybe Love” had a successful opening on Wednesday, taking the top spot at the local box office, which had been occupied by Marvel’s superhero flick “Eternals” since Nov. 3.

The film, starring Ryu Seung-ryong and Oh Na-ra, opened with around 43,000 ticket sales, grossing around 404 million won ($343,000).

Directed by filmmaker and actress Jo Eun-ji, the film revolves around a best-selling author and teacher, Kim Hyun (Ryu), who has been experiencing writer’s block for seven years.

He enjoys a friendly relationship with his ex-wife Mi-ae (Oh), who is now dating his best friend and editor, as they care for their hypersensitive teenage son.

To get his career back on his feet, he decides to work on a new novel with an aspiring writer, his student, Yoo-jin (Mu Jin-sung), only to complicate his life when Yoo-jin comes out as gay and he confess his love.

‘Maybe Love’ is the director’s feature debut, best known for starring in action film ‘The Villainess’ (2017) and thriller ‘True Fiction’ (2017).

With “Perhaps Love” claiming the top spot on the chart, “Eternals” slipped to second place with 34,000 tickets sold, earning 334 million won ($283,000).

The action blockbuster, directed by Chloe Zhao, has seen around 2.6 million tickets sold, racking up 27 billion won ($23 million) since its release in local theaters on November 3.
