Jimmy O Yang Stand-Up Comedy Film ‘The Opening Act’ Acquired By RLJE Films

RLJE Films has acquired the North American rights to “The Opening Act,” a comedy starring “Silicon Valley” actor Jimmy O. Yang as an aspiring comedian.

“The Opening Act” is directed and written by stand-up comedian Steve Byrne (“Always Amazing”) and was produced by Vince Vaughn, and RLJE Films will release the film theatrically, on demand and in digital HD from October 16, 2020 .

Yang stars in “The Opening Act” alongside a cavalcade of other comics such as Alex Moffat, Cedric The Entertainer, Neal Brennan, Debby Ryan, Ken Jeong, Bill Burr, Jermaine Fowler and Russell Peters.

In it, Yang plays a man stuck in a thankless job while trying to pursue his true passion in stand-up comedy. But when he gets the chance to host his hero’s opening act, the realities of stage life crumble. Between the relentless rowdies, drunken comedy groupies, and hard-to-impress morning radio DJs, things get off to a bad start. Even though he can learn from his idols and overcome challenges, he will have to prove that he has what it takes to make his dream come true.

Other comedians who also appear in “The Opening Act” include Whitney Cummings, Tom Segura, Iliza Shlesinger, Roy Wood Jr., Anjelah Johnson-Reyes, Kathleen Madigan, Felipe Esparza, Moshe Kasher, Brooks Wheelan and Alonzo Bodden.

“Steve Byrne has created an entertaining and insightful film that showcases the challenges and rewards of pursuing a career in comedy, while inviting some of the funniest people in the business to join in on his passion project,” said Mark Ward, director of acquisitions at RLJE Films said in a statement. “We are thrilled to bring this hilarious film to audiences this fall.”

“The Opening Act” was produced by Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley under their Wild West Picture Show banner and by Sefton Fincham and was executive produced by Dwight Manley, Michael Shader, Dean Buchanan, Vahid Shababi. Ward and Jess De Leo of RLJE Films brokered the deal with Endeavor Content, who co-financed and represented the film, on behalf of the filmmakers.
