Unpregnant, the recently released film, struck us for several reasons: the central theme of friendship, the hilarious hustle and bustle of the road trip, and the heroine’s active pursuit of an abortion. It’s not an easy topic to tackle, but writers Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan have mastered it skillfully. It’s a fun book with an important perspective, and now, dear reader, HBO Max is turning it into a movie!

What is in pregnant women
Veronica Clarke, 17, takes a pregnancy test at school and is arrested by Bailey Butler, her former best friend, who sees the result positive. Bailey first offers to go to a clinic where she can have an abortion if she needs it, without knowing who it is. After that, she thinks Veronica will keep the baby and dispose of the test.
Veronica decides to have an abortion, only to learn that in Missouri it is illegal to do so without parental approval. She quickly strategizes to get to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where clinics will perform abortions without parental consent, but she doesn’t have the financial means to complete the trip.
When she meets her boyfriend Kevin, she is baffled when he proposes to her after learning of her pregnancy. He also admits that he saw the condom was broken. Veronica seems to be interested in the proposal and accepts the ring.
She then approaches Bailey, who offers to transport her to Albuquerque. Veronica tries to pawn her engagement ring at the first stop, but Kevin, who follows her, intervenes. When the friendly pawnshop learns that Veronica needs money for an abortion, he agrees to buy her ring.
Veronica and Bailey travel to Texas, but they argue over their previous friendship, which Bailey doesn’t understand because her father disapproves of his geek activities as a youngster.
Bailey is surprised by the entry of the local sheriffs as he stops at a restaurant. Her mother’s boyfriend owns the car they drive, she explains. When another client named Jarrod causes a stir, the females manage to escape attention. Later, Jarrod offers them a ride and introduces them to Matthews, a racing driver who offers to drop them off at the nearest bus station.
This is a woman and Bailey is instantly drawn to her. Bailey then goes out as a lesbian and kisses Matthews for the first time. A young couple who hear their need to travel to Albuquerque offer to drive them there before Matthews can bring them to the station.
When Bailey and Veronica arrive at the couple’s home in the morning, they realize that they are pro-lifers trying to stop Veronica from having an abortion. They manage to escape the grip of the couple by taking their GMC Yukon and pretending to die.

If Unpregnant had leaned a little more into this irony, his dark characters might not have felt so far removed from reality. Overall, Unpregnant’s off-putting racial overtones made me want more current portrayals of blacks seeking abortions in movies, as their geographic and economic status sometimes hampers their ability to terminate a pregnancy as well.
