Anderson .Paak is set to make his directorial debut. Media company Stampede Ventures has revealed the rapper and multi-instrumentalist is set to lead K-pops!, a new comedy-drama film. Anderson .Paak will star in the film as a failed musician who travels to Korea to write songs for K-pop stars, only to learn that his long-lost son (played by real son Soul Rasheed) is at the head of one of the newest rising acts in the country.
“My mother is from Korea but she was adopted so I never knew anything about my Korean heritage until I met my wife. This film is a reflection on my experience learning that part of myself from alongside my wife and son and spending even more time with them,” .Paak said in a statement. “I knew it would be something I would have to write and direct, and Stampede Ventures took a chance and thought I could pull it off. I’m excited to bring it to the big screen.
The scenario for K-pops! was co-written by Anderson .Paak and Khaila Amazan. He also produces through his company Apeshit Films in addition to Greg Silverman on behalf of Stampede Ventures, Jaeson Ma on behalf of EST Studios and Jon Park on behalf of Big Dummie.
It’s been a busy year for .Paak and Silk Sonic, his ’70s R&B project with Bruno Mars. After releasing his first album An Evening with Silk Sonic in November, .Paak and Mars performed at the 2022 Grammys where they won four Grammy Awards for their single “Leave the Door Open” (Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song). The duo is currently in full residency in Las Vegas.
In February, .Paak performed at the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show where he played drums for Eminem’s segment. He also stopped sesame street to sing “What Is a Holiday”, a song celebrating various holidays around the world, with Elmo and Cookie Monster.
