Solar opposites pair Grace Parra Janney and Josh Bycel are developing a one-camera comedy for ABC inspired by the great Mexican-American family of the premier in Texas.
The couple have teamed up with Eva Longoria and her production company UnbeliEVAble Entertainment to develop a half-hour series for the Disney-owned broadcast network. 20th Television, where Longoria and her production partner Ben Spector have a first contract, is the studio.
The multigenerational comedy is about an upper-middle-class family dealing with grief, identity, and a reassessment of their roles after the death of the family patriarch.
Parra Janney and Bycel are both writer-producers of Hulu’s animated comedy Solar opposites. Parra Janney, whose writing credits also include Star Trek: Lower Bridges and Broke, also appeared on Hypermarket and as a contributor to The Night Show with Larry Wilmore.
Bycel has served as an executive producer on shows such as Happy endings and Netflix The big show as well as co-showrunner of the final season of Scrubs. He also worked with Desperate housewives star Longoria in her NBC comedy Telenovela.
Parra Janney will write and produce the new project, while Bycel will produce alongside Longoria and Spector.
Longoria said: “I’ve been a huge fan of Josh’s work since our time together on Telenovela and Grace and I share similar ‘Texan’ origins. At UnbeliEVAble we always strive to tell true and authentic stories, so I am especially proud to share one that is reminiscent of my own family’s experience.
Parra Janney is replaced by UTA and Ziffren, Bycel is replaced by UTA and Morris Yorn and Longoria by WME, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Jackoway Austen.
