20th Century Studios Capture Comedy Film Directed by Sandra Oh and Awkwafina


Following an outbid against several studios, Deadline announces that 20th Century Studios has successfully won the rights to the untitled comedy film from Gloria Sanchez Productions, starring Golden Globe winners Sandra Oh and Awkwafina as each other’s sisters. The project was originally set up at Netflix when the streamer first acquired the rights last year. It’s unclear why Netflix decided to exit the project, but outlet sources note that 20th Century Studios is currently prioritizing its development.

The untitled comedy film will be directed by Jessica Yu from a script written by Jen D’Angelo. It will be produced by Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum for Gloria Sanchez; and Italy Reiss and Maggie Haskins for Artists First, with Gloria Sanchez’s Alex Brown serving as executive producer. Sara Shepard will oversee the project on behalf of 20th Century Studios.

“It follows a bright but narrowly wounded Jeopardy-obsessed young woman who must find her ex-train wreck of a sister when they are forced to find the money to cover their mother’s gambling debts,” reads the synopsis. . “The two embark on a wild trek across the country in the desperate hope of earning enough money the only way they can think of – by turning our reluctant hero into a genuine DANGER champion.”

Oh will next be seen in the fourth and final season of the BBC Kill Eve which is currently still in production. Meanwhile, Awkwafina, who after recently starring at Marvel Studios Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringswill also star in the Apple drama swan songUniversal Pictures animated film The villainsand Disney live action Little Mermaid film.
